Sites, maps and routes

Aurora can place pages on a map. The Site page type stores places, any page with a Location property can appear on a map, and the Route block plans a trip through several Sites.

Turn on Sites

Sites are hidden in a new workspace. Turn them on in Settings → Workspace → Page types under Visibility.

Create a Site

  1. Click New page in the sidebar and choose Site.
  2. Fill in the title, the location and a category, or choose Skip and create blank.

A Site comes with these fields: Location, Category (Saved location, Place to visit, Outdoor, Work), Status (Saved, Planned, Visited, Skip), Priority, Visited, Rating, Access and Season.

The Sites list opens as a map. Switch to Table, Gallery, List or Hierarchy with the view buttons.

Set a location

A Location field takes coordinates as latitude, longitude. Type them in directly, or click Open map next to the field to open Edit location, where you can:

  • click the map or drag the marker
  • type Latitude and Longitude, and add an optional Label
  • search for a place with Place search (AuroraCloud workspaces only)
  • click Use current location

Click Save to keep the change, or Cancel to discard it. Click Clear location next to the field to remove a location.

Location fields work on other page types too. Add a Location property to a custom page type or a database, and those pages can appear on maps as well (see Pages and Databases).

Map views

Pages with a location can be shown on a map in several places:

  • the Sites list
  • a collection, with the Map view
  • a Live query block (/query), with the Map view
  • a Map query block (/map), which starts in map view and shows only pages that have a location

On a map, nearby markers are grouped into clusters. Use Color by to colour markers by Type, Category, Status, Priority or Visited. Show missing lists matching pages that have no location yet, so you can fill them in, and Fit to results zooms to the markers. Very large result sets show only some of the markers; narrow the filters to see the rest.

Plan a route

Type /route in a page to insert a Route block, then give it a title.

  1. Choose Pick a Site… and Add Site for each stop.
  2. Reorder stops with Move stop up and Move stop down.
  3. For each stop, set the Stop status (Planned, Visited or Skipped), write a Stop note…, and use Link task to attach tasks.

Show the route as a List, a Map, or both side by side with Split. Stops need a Site with a location to appear on the map.

When at least two stops have a location, Open in maps opens the route as directions in Google Maps in a new tab.

Privacy

Maps, place search and directions each contact a service outside your workspace. Here is what each one sends:

  • Map tiles. By default, maps load their background tiles directly from the MapLibre demo tile server. Your browser requests the tiles for the areas you look at, so that server sees your IP address and which parts of the map you view. To use a different provider, go to Settings → Preferences → Integrations → Map sources, set Tile source to Custom MapLibre style URL, and enter a MapLibre style URL (HTTPS, or HTTP on localhost for a tile server on your own computer). This setting applies to this browser or device only.
  • Place search. In AuroraCloud workspaces, the text you search for is sent to AuroraCloud, which looks it up with its place-search provider. Local workspaces don't offer place search. If the service isn't available, enter coordinates by hand.
  • Current location. Aurora asks your browser for your location only when you click Use current location, and your browser asks for permission first.
  • Open in maps. Opening a route in Google Maps sends the coordinates of its stops to Google.

If the map tiles can't load, Aurora says so, and you can still edit coordinates by hand.

Aurora is in public beta and free while beta.
